Equalisation of Safeway pension benefits

Equalisation of Safeway pension benefits

In 1991 the Company made the decision to equalise normal pension ages. The method was subsequently challenged in the courts and the Company was instructed to equalise from 1996 rather than 1991.

Following the Court of Appeal’s decision in July 2020 instructing the Trustee to equalise normal pension ages for men and women from 1996 as opposed to 1991, we’ve worked closely with the Scheme Administrator, Mercer, to review and where necessary recalculate members’ benefits.

The members who are affected are members who are taking their pension, and who had service between 1991 and 1995.

If you are impacted, you’ll receive a letter from us.

If you have received a letter from us, you don’t need to do anything but if you have any questions, you can contact the Scheme Administrator, Mercer.
